Washburn were the parents or the family, and Susie and Sam were their children. The Washburn Family: The Washburn family were the people who moved in next to the de la Torre's when their family moved to the United States. She always wore purple, she slept in a coffin, and she believed she knew what was going to happen in the future because she had "visions". Chucha seems like a strange person to several people. Chucha was considered a family member, but she was really just the person who helped raise several members of Anita's family, including herself. Tio Toni and Papi were involved in a "plan" together along with several other men. All of Anita's family thought he was dead or caught by the SIM until he appeared one day after hiding from everybody for a very long time. Carla and her family had to leave for the United States because the couldn't stay and didn't want to get caught. Carla is Anita's cousin and was her best friends when she was in the United States. He has the habit of biting his nails and he just so happens to like Oscar's older sister, Maria. Mundin is fifteen years old and isn't quite, but doesn't cause much trouble. Lucinda didn't show much love towards Anita until the day that she was notice by El Jefe and had to escape to the United States. Lucinda is Anita's oldest sibling who is sixteen, private, and gets rashes regularly. Mami is a stay at home mom because back then most mothers didn't work and Papi is a. She doesn't have a clue as to what is going on in the world other than the fact that her and her family are not free.Īnita's Family: Mami and Papi are Anita's parents. All her family in town, Sam to still be her best friend, and not having to hide from everyone and everything. She wants everything to be like it was before. Throughout the book Anita matures and becomes a young woman. She realizes that people change all the time because she fell out of love with Sam, her former best friend and first love, over one night because of the ways he changed. She has several family members living in the United States, but now very few living with her and her family. She and her whole family are all Dominican Republican. She has both a mother and a father and two siblings, which she is the youngest of all three children. Throughout the book she fees like she loses more and more of the people she loves. She is a young Dominican Republican pre-teen girl.
